I have been playing about on 8 string lap steel and have been thinking about converting my ZB Student to a limited degree. Now bearing in mind that it will have 3 pedals and not 5, which are the most used pedals and levers in C6 mode? There are many copedants about showing what they do so that wont be a problem, but I think its lack of understanding as to the type of chords that are created with the pedals.
I read somewhere years ago that there are 2 pedals that are near enough used as much as the A and B on E9.

Hi Mick, there are a few C6th wizards on here who can answer this better than I, but
I read somewhere years ago that there are 2 pedals that are near enough used as much as the A and B on E9.
5 & 6 us the answer to that question.
Have fun with the ZB Student, I was just listening to the man himself on a 71 album.
Zane Beck plays the new ZB Student (album courtesy of Mr Bloomfield)
The cover info states, he is using an 11 string student, E9th with added C6th. 3 x 4
A couple of the tracks sound remarkably similar to Mr Brumley! I wonder who taught who!

My thought is that you will not find it satisfactory converting a 3 pedal guitar to C6th as the tuning doesn't really work the way E9th does. You will be better to continue to use an 8string "plank" in C6th until you can get the full monty.
I use the 4th pedal less than the others, but 5 though to 8 are regularly used (4 and 5 a little more, it can be said) and so is the C to B (also a C to C#) knee lever and without them all I would prefer to have none. The tuning lends itself to "non-pedal" bar work so, as said already, if you fancy C6th but don't have the D-10, then playing the tuning non-pedal as you are doing will give you more useful practice than having the "wrong" or incomplete pedal compliment.

Mick, how many knee levers have you got on this guitar?

The answer is 4. The usual E9 setup at the moment.

What I personally would do, although I'm not telling you to do this is :-
Pedals - as 5,6 and 7.
Knees - C (string 3)down to B. A (string 4) up to Bb. A(string 4) down to G#. If you are using a top G, E(string 2) down to D. Also on this knee you can take C(string 10) up to D.
On my set up I've always used Pedal 7 as a knee lever. Everybody's got their own ideas, there's endless possibilities and you will probably refine your own set up as you go along.
Best of luck
Tony
