Volume Pedals General

hi, newbie so bear with

have been playing for a while but only recently started gigging ( learning curve engage)
I have an old Sho-Bud pedal somebody gave me with a 500 pot but am finding far too little travel distance between LOUD and inaudible.
apologies if this is a familiar subject but what is the solution??

Get a new 500K pot in there - you should be able to get a smooth swell or taper of volume from completely off to completely on. The new Goodrich long life pot is very good, and you can get them from Gerry Hogan.

while on the subject of volume pedals, I'd like to ask, after all the Hilton and Goodrich volume pedals that seem to be most in use amongst steel guitarists, what other make of volume pedal would rank in 3rd or 4th place as being dependable and suited for pedal steel?

Any pedal will do as long as it is fitted with 500 pot, the rest of pedal is just a metal casing holding pot.There are several systems inside to activate pot eg Goodrich uses string , old ZB used rack and pinion system, both good , have used both, it mainly depends on personal choice of which pedal YOU feel comfortable using.It is a bit like fridge/freezers , they all look similar, with various cosmetic changes to make you like their particular brand, but open them up and what do you find ? ---a Phillips motor.Personally I think Hilton without pot is the best buy, but you pays your money and you takes your choice.

I am about to buy a volume pedal, I take it that ernie ball juniors, boss FV 500s etc are not really used in steel circles then??

Personally would not go for any of those, why not stick advert in wanted section and see if anyone has anything they want to sell, speak to JD, or give Gerry hogan a call , they may have something.Reason for not recommending the EB is that connections are on front of pedal not the side making positioning difficult(believe it only has 250ohm pot)

Personally, I would go with Hilton (Which i use) or telonics, or goodrich. All pretty good.
