Lubrication

Mon Jun 23, 2025 1:08 pm

Hi All

I have a small issue with my Williams in that when I raise the E strings the 8th string doesn't return to pitch but returns sharp (until I lower them, then it does). I was wondering if this is likey to be a mere lubrication matter or whether some adjustment might be necessary. If the former, what lubricants do you guys use? I have used 3 in 1 a couple of times but I'm not sure if that's really suitable or not. Suggestions welcome (about lubricants, not me giving up playing you understand!!).

I have used Tri Flow for many years although many steel players use 3 in one which gets good reviews.
I have one of those applicators which is not unlike a hypodermic needle and is very good for ensuring the lubricant goes exactly where You want it.
I have never messed with the return springs on the changer but You may need to increase the tension a smidgen.
Good luck.

Thanks Billy

I will get some Tri Flow. Bill Rudolph, who built the guitar, got back to me and said I might also tighten the string changer spring, sounds horrifying but I'll try and work out what he means. I didn't realise you had to maintain these things...playing them is hard enough. Remind me not to buy a dog.

Hi Gary I use 3 in 1. I have recently brought a pack of 5 Blunt needle syringes on amazon. £3.99 varying size needles great for hard to reach parts with out getting oil everywhere. Dave :D
