I am in the process of rebuilding an early Springfeild PSG to my own specifications and would appreciate any advice or information about fitting extra return tension springs on pedals and levers as shown in the pictures.
Is this a good idea ?
What are the advantages or disadvantages of increasing the tension on the cross shaft movement ?
What type of Spring is best?
Am I wasting my time in trying to re invent the wheel?

Those springs were not made to increase the tension, but to take the bars back to the initial movement. They have no incidence in the sound. Actually you can live without them.

Thanks for your reply Fran, I had realised they were for returning the movement to it's original starting point and taking up any play in the system, but do they help in the " feel" of pedals and levers by making the movement smoother and more positive as well as assisting in the returning of the pedal to it's original position, can anyone else add their opinion or tell me I am chasing shadows?

I love your idea of servo motors. Perhaps the sort of technology that goes into artificial hands? You could be a world leader!
In my tinkering over the last few years, I found that the return springs were essential to make sure pull rods tuning nuts had a little clearance from the changer fingers so I always put them back on if I tried removing them. I suppose if you had an additional adjustable spring you could make all pedals feel the same but its not something Ive ever felt the need for.
