I just saw a post on Facebook saying that Weldon Myrick has had a severe stroke and is in critical condition.
Best wishes for a swift recovery.
Billy

Alarming news. Weldon is an all time great, an exceptionally gifted player. I really hope that he can recover from this.
Thanks for making us aware, Billy.

Unfortunately Weldon lost his fight this afternoon. Such a sad loss. What a great player

I read earlier the family were gathered round to say their last farewells. Tis sad another of our corner stones has gone!
What a talent he was, I used to go out looking for country CDs not by artist but by checking the musicians list for Weldon playing on it... actually true! Our thoughts as ever are with the family. Weldon look down on us now and then and give us one of your smiles!

That is so sad, I had a sinking feeling yesterday when I heard of his stroke. Another great light extinguished - RIP Weldon.

In one way I am glad that Weldon never regained consciousness as it means he didn't suffer.
I got hooked on Weldon's playing when I was learning to play. He was so inspirational. I play the 2 Area Code 615 albums regularly in my car, and I am always knocked out with his playing from that period in the late 60's / early 70's. His playing stands up today, it was so creative and ahead of its time. If you want to hear sublime steel playing at its best, listen to his 'Why Ask Why' from Area Code. Still puts shivers up my spine when I hear that climax when he plays the high part towards the end and his Emmons push pull just sings beautifully. His intro and solo on Connie Smith's 'I'll Come Running' is one of the best of all time. He picked up on Lloyd's chicken pickin' style and took it to a new level.
Rest in peace Weldon, you were an absolute giant of the instrument.
Hear Welephant Walk at 25.23. Unfortunately Why Ask Why is on the first album, but A Trip In The Country has some good stuff on it. .
