John was old school, a great player and a great bloke, the oldies will always remember his Afro hairstyle.
He is as close to a UK steel guitar legend as we can get.

I'm sadly rather late to this thread. John was indeed a lovely guy. In fact he was the first steel player I ever met, at the Monday jams at a pub in Rushden. I had my Sho Bud Maverick, he had his ZB D10...what a sound! I was later in a band with him for a while plying 6-string, and he now had a Sho Bud D10, beautiful guitar, but never quite had the sound of his ZB. He was very supportive of my fledging steel playing, and a true gentleman. I was in touch with him earlier this year, sadly he died soon after. I think I've spent much of my life trying to get the sound I heard him get that first time...wonderful!!
