Great thread, John. I'm glad you brought it up, because we often have no idea just how valuable is the hoard of kit and instruments we pull together over the years.

My firm does a lot of work for families after the death of a loved one, but we can do so much if we agree a "buddy" system so that if one of us drops off the twig our stuff gets proper value and benefits the estate instead of being dumped for pennies. There - you don't even need a lawyer for that!

A good topic John which certainly gives a lot to think about. Would it be an idea to centrally hold an inventory of equipment and next of kin details (almost like a steelies will) then, if the twig gives way, to ask for buddies to assist the family in advertising and passing on the treasure? Just a thought.

It is not exactly the best topic of conversation but it needs to be attended to, as we all have our limited allocation of time on planet Earth. I personally have taken care of the problem as follows, I know it somewhat time consuming but if you have hundreds or even thousands of pounds worth of instruments it worth your while doing it.

Outside of leaving an instrument to a named person the answer is quite simple, first take stock of all your musical instruments. Then generate a list on your computer of all the items along with any relative information such as the make, the year of manufacture, model along with their respective values at that point in time. Then take a photograph of each item taking care to cross reference it to your generated list of instruments. Finally upload all the pictures and information to your computer and burn them on to a DVD. Keep the end product (The DVD) in with your will. Job Done. Peace of mind.

I thought I would resurrect my old topic as it seems to be "in Vogue" at the moment and re state that nothing has changed in my choice of good friends at the moment that I am sure would act for me in the event of my demise ...... ( clog popping).
As there is no current Mrs.Davis, just a shed full of ex wives I have only Becky to consider as my other Daughters are grown and well able to care for themselves.
I am very pleased that I have been able to help a few bereaved ladies in our community and some steel playing Bro's that have gone on ahead, at least four in the past 12 months (names and contact detail available.) and I know all were grateful for the help and the guitars found new homes, Two of these ladies received 100% proceeds of sale.
I don't know how many would agree with me but I have mostly found that steel players are a breed apart and good people to deal with, there is some times a little professional jealousy at some one else's ability or apprehension at meeting new players etc. but, once we get to know each other... we are nice people.
We are still sending out strings here, never had to ask for payment "up front" and never yet been let down.......Thanks to all.
