It is not exactly the best topic of conversation but it needs to be attended to, as we all have our limited allocation of time on planet Earth. I personally have taken care of the problem as follows, I know it somewhat time consuming but if you have hundreds or even thousands of pounds worth of instruments it worth your while doing it.
Outside of leaving an instrument to a named person the answer is quite simple, first take stock of all your musical instruments. Then generate a list on your computer of all the items along with any relative information such as the make, the year of manufacture, model along with their respective values at that point in time. Then take a photograph of each item taking care to cross reference it to your generated list of instruments. Finally upload all the pictures and information to your computer and burn them on to a DVD. Keep the end product (The DVD) in with your will. Job Done. Peace of mind.
