Hello there,

I'm a new member and new player, thought I'd say hello. I've been playing a couple of months, and I'm totally hooked.

Everyday I realise more just how impossible the instrument is. I'm flailing around picking up bits online and through whatever articles I can get my hands on. I'm concentrating on getting the chord voicings and the basic chord grips down at the moment, but any tips gratefully reviewed. Right hand blocking and hitting the A pedal with the left hand side of my foot without pressing the B pedal are just the latest things I think I might never get my head round.

Cheers!

Welcome Webbo!
I remember feeling exactly the same and the good news is, that after 4 years you'll probably feel exactly the same
Have you come across Joe Wright's lessons on the Sierra Steel Guitar site? Well worth a gander. Good luck on your journey :guitar:

Hi Danny,

Thanks for the encouragement, appreciate it!

Yes, I've read a lot on here about the sierra steels lessons but I'm afraid the links don't seem to work on the site anymore. If anyone knows where any live links exist, I'd love to have a crack at the lessons.

Cheers.

Webbo! I've just been on the site, at the above link, and it worked fine. Could it be a firewall thing, or flash or something at your end? I'm not that tech saavy, sorry I can't help.

Thanks Danny, you were right, something was up with my browser. All sorted now, and I've opened up a whole new archive of things to learn! Cheers.

Whereabouts are you, Neil?
There are a number of local groups meeting around the country - you could do worse than attend one if it's in your locality.
There's London, Glasgow, Bristol and North Yorkshire if that's handy for you.
Contact details can be found with a quick search.

Cheers Nick, I'm London based so I'll look up where the next one is happening. Although I kind of assumed that I'd be a bit out of my depth at this stage because I really know very little.

Neil, Jonathan Shacklock runs a grouping of London steelies, and he will help you loads. PM him on this forum. And if Matt Park has the time to spare from his jet-setting lifestyle (! ) you will find he can teach you more in an hour than I've learned in the last year. They are both in your neck of the woods. This is a great group, everyone is so willing to help. Good luck!

Don't worry about feeling out of your depth, everybody has. The quickest way to learn is to sit down with someone, take home what you pick up there then, seat time, seat time, seat time, seat time. This instrument can make you feel out of your depth, it doesn't matter how long you've been playing. I'm sure the London boys will look after you, if they don't, move to Scotland. Donny.

Cheers Will and Donny, much appreciated. From recommendations on here, I had my first lesson with Matt and he was great. I'll get in touch with Jonathan too, ta. And yes, the best advice does seem to be to practice time! Cheers.
