A distinct lack of information in members profiles

Why is it that most people joining don't give us more information about themselves and their music in their profile ?
Maybe a general PM from the ADMIN would help jizz them up a bit, but then again if they haven't set their preferences correctly they wouldn't necessarily get it would they ? So maybe a bulk E-Mail to all , re preferences etc ?

I guess some may only put limited info on their profile, or may not be aware that it can be filled in at all (as all that's required to register is username, email address and password).

Once approved, users can update their profile by clicking on the Image User Control Panel link (at the top of the page), then on the Profile tab.

If you want any custom field(s) in profiles (for example, current instrument of choice) let me know and I'll add them, too.

This subject led me to look at my profile and to see what a sorry picture it was. I've updated it as much as I know how and I agree with Baz, it would be good to know a little more about other members. For instance, just by looking at Baz's profile I realised I was missing out on getting know a lot of steelies on Facebook , most of whom are not on this forum. I now have some new steelie friends and, as a relative beginner,I now have a much wider knowledge base. I need that.

I am not looking to marry any of you guys so I don't need to get to know you too intimately but, hey, strangers remain strangers but friends have an opportunity to grow together.

I know there are members on here who, like me, don't post too often but who log in daily because just reading the posts keeps us familiar and up to date. I see healthy debate on this forum, I gain valuable information from it and all this is good but the most valuable thing I get from it is getting to know people who once were strangers and being able to relate with them as friends. You can't do that with a pseudonym. It starts with disclosure and that's why I've updated my profile.

Good subject Baz.

Blessings on y'all
Alan

Good point, and so I've added a profile field for "Real Name". This is, of course, optional.

For the record, actual usernames (that which you log in with and is shown on every post you make) can't be changed by the user. If anyone wants theirs changed just send a Forum Administrator a PM with your request.

Same here too James. I can live my life quite happily without social networking. I know people who are quite addicted to facebook. They can keep my share of that
