Caution: Hampshire-based Newbie approaching!

Postby JohnnySomersett » Mon Mar 17, 2025 1:55 pm

Good Afternoon everyone, total newbie here.

I've spent a little time browsing the forum and it's a great source for knowledge! A real goldmine.

I'm here mainly looking for info as to what sort of entry-level steelies are about over here in the UK, how much I should expect to have to spend and particular brands to keep an eye out for? I've done a chunk of research and now know to look for a minimum of 3 pedals and (ideally) 4 knee levers. Single neck too as I don't want to run before I can walk. I have decades on regular guitar and a little lapsteel under my belt so not going in totally blind - but I understand this is going to be a very steep learning curve.

Not fussed if I end up with an older instrument as I like the faux Formica wood/teak style a lot of them seem to have, but looks are secondary really.

Best places to look would also be helpful as they're not a very common instrument over here I've found and can vary wildly in price.

Thanks in advance
Johnny

Ha! Hey John, I thought you'd pop up in here!

The amount of brands out there to research is massive, and not a lot of information for them either it seems. Had some good recommendations on what to look for elsewhere so far. Your Bennett is still top of the list though right now!

Hi Johnny. Where about a are you in Hampshire. Would you be interested in playing live. I have a county band and am looking for a steel pedal/lap player. Even if you wanted to use us to hone your skills, and get paid, I would be happy?
