Hello all in steelies world !!...........
This looks like a great community to be part of. Just a short time of searching around the topics confirms that there is a world of info here for seasoned pro and newbies alike.
I am a real latecomer to this mystic secret art having just recently aquired a Bennett single 10 in what looks like great condition.
I am a electric/ acoustic guitar player of 40 yrs and also play mandolin, dobro, National, lap steel and ( thanks to the transpose buttons) a little honky took piano. I love Americana......especially old timey stuff , but pretty much anything with strong pedal steel sounds.
Even my basic Bennet looks so intimidating.......especially the engineering in terms of setting up and maintenance. I have done the fettling of my own guitars for years, but the guts under this thing looks scary!

I live in mid Kent, so I wonder if there is a experienced player in Kent or south east London who would be willing to help me out getting a start? I’d ideally like to come to you and spend a whole day with someone who can show me the basic set up/ pedal adjustment/ fine tuning set up etc etc along with some of the simplest chord structures. More than happy to pay for your time for a day. I have various books / DVD’s etc, but I reckon this could kick start me down the road and get me going. ?

Anyway, it’s great to be here and looking forward to being part of the community and the new challenge of this daunting instrument. SEASONS GREETINGS AND ALL THE BEST FOR 2019.

I’ve been at this fascinating instrument for about a year. I hope you are ready for a new and exciting addiction
The people here are very friendly and extremely helpful.

Have a look at Troy Brenningmeyers lessons on You Tube, he has a brilliant diagram of chords achieved with different pedals and levers, along with other starter lessons.
Steel Picking lessons, also on You Tube, are terrific for beginners upward. Aron, who teaches is very easy to follow, and gives you time to let what he is saying sink in. He also Has a lovely accent, especially with strings Five and Nine!

The undercarriage is not as daunting as it first seems, it’s a bit like grownups Meccano! ...

Best of luck with trying to get all your limbs and fingers to do what your brain tells them to do, at the same time

Hello and welcome Cadman,
I can tell from your post you're already hooked. I'd echo Stan's suggestions and add a Google for Joe Wright lessons on the Sierra Steel website and also for Mickey Adams.
And I reckon your thoughts of hooking up with an experienced picker are spot on. Noting that you are in Kent, I had a quick shuffty in this month's edition of the British Steelies Society Newsletter (which is a very worthwhile subscription) and saw that Alan Cook is a teacher in Kent. Alan posts loads of good stuff on the forum and should be easy for you to contact.
