I haven't heard about the steel guitar meetings either. Are they to do with The British Steelies?

These terms might well be my own descriptions
"Bar slamming" is a form of hammering-on, except you (gently  ) slam the bar onto the strings to sound a whole chord without picking - often they would then repeat a few times, going up a fret each time (e.g. to go from the I to the IV chord). Violent swells with the volume pedal can help this effect.
Tipping only means using the tip to hammer-on using the tip, with the bar held like a pencil - thus open strings can be incorporated and the effect is of terrific speed.
One other "trick" that springs to mind is strumming across the strings behind the bar, best at the 12th fret and looks spectacular when you cross the hands and strum with a great flourish! In fact, all these movements were done dramatically and are supposed to impress an audience with your "great" ability - despite being bad technique and frowned on by purists  .
The British Steelies forum and the newsletter are complimentary without being the same. You will mostly find the same people in both.
Hope this helps? :P
