Welcome to the forum Bruce.
I play mostly pedal steel & a bit of Dobro so I may not be the best to advise, but I bought a cheapo jagard from ebay for about £60 and it sounds fine to me, I wouldn't dismiss these (and the badged artisan etc..) too hastily. Looks like it would be easy enough to add grunt by changing the pickup for a few ££, but personally I don't think it needs it.
The red 8-string C6 does look a nice machine.

i've got one of them too and was just about to start doing some lap steel playing so i'm glad to hear they get your endorsement Allan
(although i was thinking 8 strings might be better than 6, but then there's always a reason to buy more kit!)

Tony Davis who posts on here has been kind enough to send me a message with another great looking steel he has offered to sell me which i'm now considering, so i feel i've definitely come to the right place here. he lives quite close to where i am too and has offered me to go see the gear and try it .... currently waiting on a response from him and hopefully take it from there. I'm pretty sure it'll be his steel or the Red 8 string linked earlier in this thread. Can't wait to get started. it does seem though whichever steel i go for it will be at least 8 strings!! the other is a twin haha
