Chris Tweed -- new member and new steelie

Hello everyone,

I recently joined the forum in advance of receiving my first PSG, which I collected from Parcel Force yesterday. I am based in Cardiff, though originally from N Ireland. I've been playing regular guitar, dobro and lap steel (C6) for many years. It remains to be seen if previous experience with these will help me climb the steep learning curve for PSG.

Not surprisingly I spent yesterday, unpacking, building, and tuning my new Stage One guitar. I then murdered many of my favourite PSG songs by trying to find the occasional lick I could play immediately I'm looking forward to making some reasonable music and, from what I have already read on the forum, this seems a great place to get advice and help from experienced players in the UK.

If there are any events or bands playing in the S Wales/Bristol area I'd be really interested to see some steel players playing live.

A big welcome Chris and many great times with your new steel. This is maybe to late for you but there is a steel festival taking place in Bristol tomorrow if you are interested you get the info from our festival section on this forum. Best of luck

Hi Chris, welcome to the madhouse, if you are interested there is a British Steelies meeting at Siston on Sat 7th May. I am travelling down from Scotland to join in the playing, come along bring your guitar, there will plenty of advice and plenty of people you can quiz. What tuning do you have on the PSG? Donny

@Roy Many thanks for the kind welcome, Roy. Tomorrow's probably out for me, but thanks for letting me know. I'll keep an eye on the Events section for events around this area.

@Donny Thanks for the welcome and the heads-up on the Siston event. I'm conflicted next weekend now between that and the Wharf Bluegrass Weekend. I play bluegrass dobro. I'm an absolute beginner on PSG and probably won't be fit for public display for a few months (years?). I have the PSG tuned to E9 and the 'standard' setup used by Doug Earnest at Stage One who built the guitar.

You might be interested to know of a steelie in Cardiff , Ian Lawrence ,who I believe, does lessons, he's a great
guy to know and a good steelie to boot !
I was from Swansea until my wife and I moved here to Corfu.

thanks for the welcome and information about Ian Lawrence. I 'met' Ian through myspace, but have yet to meet him in person. Maybe I'll send him an email about PSG lessons.

Bet the weather's a bit better in Corfu today than it is here. Sounds like a wise move.

Chris, You should come to Siston, and bring your guitar, it doesn't matter that you can't play it. You'll learn more in the one night just talking and listening.
