Hi to all you steelies,
I am a new player not only to Lap Steel ( I have a Gretch G5700 ) but to instrument playing in general.
I love the sound and am working my way through the Hal Leonard tutorial.
The frustration is getting an experienced player/teacher or even someone who plays but is willing to help within reasonable distance to Banstead in Surrey (SM7 area) to make the most of the instrument. I do not want to get into bad habits and want guidance on picking techniques and possible string changes. UTube is ok to watch but hands on beats everything. Is there SOMEONE out there, many guitar tutors but none who can help.

great to hear from you both and thanks,
John, not up on technology i am afraid, I do not have Skype. However with your title maybe you can help in one matter. My Gretch is strung from 12 gauge for string 1 to 52 gauge for 6. 5 & 6 seem especially slack when tuned to open E. My current manual suggests 6 should be 60-64 gauge for G and 54-58 at least for E. Do you agree as I cannot get a positive note on 6 especially as i am using a Dunlop 920 slider and it is easy to flex the string out of key.

Hi,Dave, Its at this point usually, Basil would jump in and give us all the correct info on the right strings for the right note:) etc. I`m afraid I am of little use in that direction.... though I think at some time there was a chart posted on one of the forums............
My Daughter Rebecca supplies strings to quite a lot of the forum members (at very reasonable prices) But they are in sets, the most popular being the"Buddy Emmons signature series from S.I.T She has E9th, C6th, Uni 12, and some 6 string sets. If you sort out your requirements and pm to me the sizes I will see what set comes closest to your needs..... JD

Hallo Dave and welcome to the asylum !
You won't meet a better bunch of guys !
As for your question, perhaps this string chart might be of help, don't take any notice of
the prices as this chart is circa. 1972/3 !It will give you an idea of guages.
I know it's for pedal steels but it's a start.
