Hi I'm new on here

Wed Mar 09, 2011 9:41 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site. I've just bought myself a pedal steel and joined the Steelies Society this week. I've had a lap steel (Morrell) for a couple of years but just bought the pedal steel. Am a bit overwhelmed at how complicated it looks but am won over every time when I start practising, I just LOVE the way it sounds. This is a quick post to say hello as I'm off upstairs for another practise for a while. I live in North Devon - if there are any others in the area I'd love to meet up. I may ask some daft questions as well as I'm a beginner on this so apologise in advance!

Don’t be 'disappearing' up those stairs mind we want to know how you are getting on!

If I wanted to learn that Sax of yours then you would hear some really daft questions! If you grasp the steel as well as that it will be us who need to worry!

Oh and Welcome btw! ;)

Hi Ruby
Where abouts in North Devon are you? I have a holiday home in Bideford, and my wife & I get to go there fairly regularly. If you are not too far away I could go over your guitar with you and give you a few pointers.

Welcome Ruby. Anybody starting the steel these days has the benefit of forums like this one, lessons on YouTube, lessons on DVD from the likes Joe Wright, lessons on Skype (I think Basil does these). My advice is to make full use of all of these. Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions. We've all had those question (and still have them). Most steel players are delighted to offer advice and just generally natter about the instrument.

Ken, I'm just outside Torrington which is around 10 miles from Bideford so not far. If you're down here it would be great to meet up. My other half also plays slide guitar so may be worth going for a couple of pints too as the nattering may go on!

Bob, I just noticed your post! Re the sax...I think the neighbours will be quite pleased with my new purchase as I can turn the guitar down, unlike the sax which now has a watershed!
