Hi,
Just like to introduce myself, my name is Geoff Noble and I live in Fife in Scotland. I've played conventional guitar for around 40-50 years, (if you count the Doctor Who theme
). I've always liked the sound of a pedal steel but as you will all appreciate it's not easy to get a hold of them in the UK at a price I could justify.
However a few years ago I decided to take the plunge and bought a 2nd hand GFI student model 3 x 2, probably from someone who is on this forum?
I mucked around for a year or so getting a feel for it but due to playing committments, didn't really have the time necessary to really get down to it. This changed the start of 2012 when I decided to give intense gigging / recording a by for a while and make a serious attempt to learn PS technique. Initially this meant putting on the picks, I'd never used picks before, in fact I very rarely used a plectrum as I'm blessed with good nails.
Anyway, I think I'm getting somewhere after the intial tangling of fingers and strings and have also developed an interest in playing lap. I have browsed this forum on many occasions and found much useful information, I hope I can contribute something back eventually
I would like to thanks Bob Adams, who met me in Fife when he was over on business and gave me a packet of tuning pegs, I broke one when setting up and hadn't a clue where to get replacements. I contacted Bob on the off chance as I had visited his web site and a more helpful man you couldn't hope to meet.

My present to myself this Xmas is this acoustic lap from Anderwood Guitars, it's now under wraps until Xmas but I played it for a night just to make sure it was allright and it sounds great. The build quality is superb, for the price a great guitar.

The Irish steel player, Percy Robinson, is also blessed with good finger nails. Percy gets a very good and quite unique sound without using picks.

Nice version of sleepwalk. TBH I'm quite enjoying using the picks now, I can get a better attack and it's a "steelier" sound. On the other hand, using nails gives a nice mellow sound. I'll probably end up doing both, at the moment I'm concentrating on the picks.
I'm trying out the Alaska picks on the lap and they seem to work well, just need to get the file out to take off the rough edges.
I've done a little adaptation of the heatshrink coated finger pick, as seen here and on other forums, I'll post a picture up. They're a bit more solid on my fingers, which I like.
