Hi - new member looking for some advice!

Hi guys - this is my first post. I'm just starting to learn steel, and have had a lesson with Gerry Hogan which was great. I'm learning on a Carter Starter which I bought in the US, but to be honest it's already starting to frustrate me and I think I would get more enjoyment out of the learning process if I had a quality instrument. I'd like to buy something better which will last me for years to come. Could anybody give me some advice on what to look for? If anyones has or knows of a quality steel which would suit me for sale in the UK that would be even better!

I hope it wasn't my offering of different advice than Ken, that has generated the above tirade, it was not meant to be contradictory to his advice, I was in no way trying to upset him, it was just that Paul had already been to Gerry, and I thought it was the best way to go. Ken is a font of knowledge on this forum and I do not want him to leave, but it is a forum for discussion and opinions, and there is no need to throw the dummy out the pram because you do not agree with another member.

Well Donny, it was certainly not me , I did not even see the post that Ken removed.... so I came along way after the train wreck.... Twood be such a shame to lose Ken he has been a major contributor.

Paul, Here`s a little more (free) advice ... If you go to you tube and type in JohnDavis45 Basic E9th Help ...you may learn some bad habits from me but it will show you some basic chords and how to get a pleasant noise out of it.

When you say that you are frustrated by the Carter Starter, do you mean the mechanics of the steel are not good enough, or the copedent is too limited ?

The Starter is three pedals/four levers E9 tuning, enough to keep you busy for several lifetimes, so it must be mechanical inferiority which is the cause of your frustration ?

well i did see the removed post, and quite frankly, i dont see what Ken is upset about, there was no conflicting advice whatsoever, Ken, very kindly offered to show Paul his six different pro steels, if paul was in the same locality, then Donny offered his own advice, as you can see above, to talk to Gerry Hogan, hardly conflicting, i hope Paul isnt put off from posting again, as he should get as much advice as possible, from as many people as he can,

Dont think this is the correct place for this,but its here so I will respond here.

Yet another situation where a few added smily's or better still the ommision of a few words might have been beneficial.
Ken Byng has to be one of the most experienced and knowledgable guys we have had on this site,his constant efforts to help and encourage guys of any standard are well known both here and the stateside forum. Even after 40 years of playing I myself called on Kens expertise last year to sort out a 1st string raise issue on my Emmons, helpfull isnt the description I would use, with his advice I had the issue sorted in no time. We also have to realise (no excuses here, just fact) that Ken has not been in the best of health of late, believe me that doesnt help (I know by my own recent misfortune)
So-perhaps ending a post with 'no one better' when Ken had just willingly invited an unknown newbie to come look at his steel setups may well have been inappropriate. Knowing Ken hospitality and loads of free invaluable advice would have gone hand in hand to the visitor- perhaps in retrospect the 'no one better' comment when referring to GH may just have dinged Kens bell a little.

Secondly, I doubt anyone who respects Ken Byng would want to see him leave this forum (enough old farts have done that already)
So! a follow up response containing the comment- 'dummy out of the pram' etc is neither helpfull or necessary in the situation.
If we have lost Kens input, this site will be a much quieter and less helpfull place than of late.
Ken-If you peek in, get your arse back here pronto, lots on here really value your input
