Hi Micky
Great to have you on board. You have been one of the stalwarts of UK steel playing for a long time and, like many of us, had to start off in the unknown for the beginning of your career. Hope you enjoy yourself here.

Thanks Ken......i remember the early days when I was just a beginner, and Bob Powell popped into a gig I was playing at with Shot Jackson. In the break, Shot came up to my fully loaded Denley  with 3 floor and 1 knee and strummed across my A6th tuning (I didn't know there was any other) ...and said in his Nashville twang "You CAN'T play Country on that Boy" .... Good days looking back :D ...Cheers mate :)

Micky - Bob died a few years ago unfortunately. He was 71. A friend of his did a biography of Bob called Heart Of A Fan, which is interesting reading. A funny story - I was playing at the Peterborough Country Music Festival back in the mid 80's. After our band finished its set, I came off stage and cased up my steel guitar. Bob Powel came up to me and we hade a good old yarn about the old days at the Ponderosa and Wembley Festivals. Alan Hope - now leader of the Raving Monster Loony Party - came up and put his hand on Bob's shoulder. He said "By Christ Bob, aren't you getting fat!" A bit of a cheek as Alan was certainly quite tubby himself at the time. Bob took Alan's hand off his shoulder and said "This conversation is very boring". He excused himself to me and toddled off leaving Mr Hope somewhat bemused. Jonny Young used to call him Pot Bowel. :D

Good to see you on the Forum Mick.
Nice bit about Bob Powell. On his radio programme he used to play some fantastic American Army and Air Force promotion tapes.
They usually featured Hal Rugg and I reckon his playing on them was his best ever.
Wish people could hear those tapes now.

Keep well Mick, as I've said before, you're an inspiration to us all.

I have been able to acquire about a dozen of the USAF recordings - and Hal Rugg is featured on most of them. They were really great, and for example Tompall and The Glaser Bros were much much better with the featured backing band, than any of their actual recordings on MGM.

If you ever see any on ebay- worth getting.
