Anyone using distortion or overdrive pedals with lap steel? Any recommendations?

Use it like a spice.

Too much is overkill

Agreed, less is more. I did try a Danelectro overdrive pedal (vv cheap) but my amp's (orange 12W guitar combo) inbuilt overdrive sounds better. I'll use the Dano for other non-steel purposes.

I've been using the Electro Harmonix "double muff" which although being a fuzz rather than overdrive/distortion does give some pretty growly, David Lindley kinda vibes.

EH also do a big muff, a little big buff and bass big muff which I've not tried with Lapsteel but sure sound decent with guitar.

Alternatively there are a ton of boutique companies that offer some great overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals (check out Zvex "fuzz factory" & "wooly mammoth", Dr. Scientist "elements", Death By Audio "supersonic fuzz gun" & "fuzz war".

Hope this helps! : )
