Hey all. I am based in London and was wondering are there any affordable/cheap painters out there. Everywhere I call try to quote me the same as a standard guitar and usually the re-painting costs the same if not more than a brand new 8 string lap steel. Any ideas?

I saw your post after reading about questions not being answered - it might be, of course, that nobody knows the answer; but-
Here's a (rough) photo of a homebuilt S-8 "Acme" (1980ish) that I painted using normal spray cans. By starting at the centre and overspraying bit by bit it came out the way I wanted. Each new colour was commenced quite a distance from the guitar and brought nearer as it go further from the centre, using big circular movements. Not tobacco sunburst, but my impression of the Fender 400 - 2000 range from 1960's
You might be able to find suitable colours and do a job yourself? I don't know if the project is a valuable antique or (as mine) something you've made. Anyway here's some response

Thanks Tony. It's great to get a response from the UK as it seems our forum is fledgling a bit. Despite lots of interest in Lap Steel Guitar not enough people are on board. Let's start the revolution.

So I may try and DIY but need to see if that's the way first. My 12 string is arriving hopefully this week from the US. I currently use an 8 stringer.

I used to get the StewMac catalog a while back - great free articles on lutherie and repairs . I use an 8 string too, and have a couple of homebuilt 7s too; C6th with a G on top. Best of luck with the job, regards, Tony.

You build as well. Great to know a uk builder who plays. Most I know don't and thus don't quite get what we require as Lap Steel Guitar players. Definitely adding you to my contacts. Thanks Tony.
