Well I've ordered a load of bits to make a steel (or rather, my other half is making it!). Have got some Loler pickups, aluminium for fretboard and tuning pegs 'end', a nice lump of old ash for the body and fretboard stickers from Georgeboards. We havent even got as far as taking a router to the ash yet but will post some pics as it goes on. Have also just bought an old Moto Guzzi which needs attention so both are going to take a while! Am interested to hear about anyone elses projects.

I found a couple of guides on hows to make lap steels, one is very in depth and I will need to find a nice piece of wood for it. The other is making a lap steel out of a pool cue case! When I have the time (and money, I'm restoring a beat up ol' Ibanez Blazer at the moment) I'm going to give the pool cue one a shot!

I here a lot of mention on these sites about loller p'ups etc. Are these specifically designed lap steel pick ups? I was thinking of trying some standard guitar ones I have lying around, like some seymour dun cans or dimarzios just to see what they sound like.

Mmmmm~~~~~~~~Maybe the terminology is slightly "Off-Putting" ...... Lappers ?? even the term Steelies is deemed strange everywhere except here.
So as I said It could possibly be the terminology in use, or maybe something else emanating from the posts ? Who knows..

Quite true, much harder to play, but more rewarding.

Indeed it is Bob, and I'll reciprocate with the felicitation. Arcada is totally correct, in fact he's the only one here that's allowed to be 110% right all the time..

Peter - re my post from July, and your reply with list of (great) things to think about...all bits still in boxes. flippin ECK! still not had time to start, but I have done lots of playing so am happy enough. My other half starting knocking a hole in our wall today (on purpose) to move the front door so I think project is forced under the couch yet again for some time.

Well, I'm always on the lookout here and on ebay for any dirt cheap laps. Hoping to build up a small collection for various tunings. If I find a real old knacker, I may well rip it up and get creative with the electronics.

Would be great to get into a build from scratch, but I just don't have the time.
