I see no-one has has given any advice on this question and we know there are reputable steel guitar manufacturers out there, and others have built lap steels. Shame.
I have restored a National twin lap steel guitar so if I can be of help I will do. What steel do you have and what exactly is the problem with it? That will give a starting point and we can go from there.

Not overly helpful yet......But hope in the future it may be.
I have recently aquired a WySeaKi 10 string Lapsteel (50s/60s Vintage with the Cyril Procter hand wound pickups) which I am guessing has some dry joints in the circuitry so not lighting up, so to speak.
I am about to take said Beast along to a couple of local to me, then if necessary even up to Gravesend to show local luthier % amp repair places in the hope of getting a yes we can do this.
I shall keep you posted upon which place is able and willing to repair/set up. restring etc.
Good luck
Van
