Lap steel recommendations

I've had a bit of a look at the forum and found a 'do not buy' list but wondering if there are some known good quality Lapsteels about.
I'm learning so no need to go super high end, but anything under a grand would be fine, looking for good quality tuners and pickups.
Even better if I can pick one up from a big box retailer (Thomann, etc) as until I move back to the UK I will struggle to get anything else delivered here in Asia.
