Duesenberg Fairytale Lap Steel

Postby dobrodave » Sat May 04, 2019 10:56 am

I'm looking for some advice on the Duesenberg Fairytale lap steel. I play an old Oahu 6 string lap steel at the moment and was wondering if anyone had made the transition to the palm levers. As they are hard to find in local guitar shops, I can't have a go on one like an ordinary guitar. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Dave.
I would have loved a Fairytale but they are well out of my price range. I had a cheap Artisan lap steel so decided to buy the multibender from Thoman and have go at fitting it to the Artisan and it works really well. Just had to widen the control plate on the lap and that was about it apart from ensuring the multibender was positioned where the old bridge was. Not very elegant but it's very usable.
The first two links are to pics of the Artisan, the other links are to useful web sites

Hope this helps.

Hi Dave
. I bought a Deusenberg Fairytale last August, it is a fabulous guitar, having played pedal steel for 50 years I found the palm pedals a steep learning curve but as usual seat time is the main provider of competence. what are your main concerns ? ask here or email me at: [email protected]. Donny
Blanton D10, Justice s10, Fender Acoustasonic 150, 1 Brain, 2 Hands, 2 Knees, & 2 Feet.

Thanks Neil, I really appreciate your help and advice, and the links . Yes I had thought about adding it to a cheaper lap steel as there are a load of them out there at the moment. I have this old Oahu that I recently built a pickup for as the original had fallen apart, and I absolutely love the sound of it, but I don't plan to add the palm bender to it any time soon. I will have a look around to see if anything takes my fancy, the Recording King looks like it might have what I'm looking for. Thanks again, Dave

Thanks Donny, my concerns are the cost firstly and whether I would be able to master the palm benders. I'm essentially a guitarist who likes to play lap steel, so I have no experience with levers of any kind and am getting 'long in the tooth' and was wondering how difficult it would be to master them. There are no shops anywhere near that even know of the existence of lapsteels never mind the Duesenberg. I need to sit down with one for a few days to see how it feels before I commit to a £1600 purchase. Unless you'll lend me yours ;-)

Hi Dave. Have a look at this guy playing a Fairytale. He is really good and shows what it can do.
