As a beginner do not focus on tone but rather focus on technique.
An excellent musician will always be excellent and sound excellent provided the instrument functions properly.
Rich Plummy tone is down to in this order Step 1 gives you the greatest change while step 4 is so finite in difference that only real music lovers of that instrument will notice:
Step 1 - Tuning
Step 2 - Technique
Step 3 - Electronics
Step 4 - Equipment Quality
If you have the tuning but no technique (as a beginner you don't as yet) forget about the rest.

I've just briefly checked out the video on your link and that should let me get to grips with the technique. I suppose that the next question is how to get that rich "plummy" tone. I have a Clearwater Weissenborn style and, despite some of the negative comments I've seen on the board, I find it to be a good entry level instrument. Yes the pickups could be better but the overall finish is excellent and the price very reasonable (to a newbie like me) and I'm not about to pay a lot for an instrument that I may not be able to get to grips with.
I am running it through the Vox equivalent of a Roland Cube and find its UK80s emulation quite good for this application.
I also have the Zoom G1x0n pedals and a Fender Mustang amp for my guitars but I haven't tried these on the lap yet.
