I would add to what PF said IMHO.
Strings also deteriorate when stored on the shelf of a music shop where they do not have the turnover to keep fresh stock and if they have come from a distributor .... how long did they have them in stock??
That is one of the reasons I started to get Becky to import them directly from Virgil Lay at the factory in Ohio, and why if you buy from her you know the strings are about as fresh as you can get.

I change my strings on my main axe at least once a week, and sometimes thrice a week especially in this hot weather. Some folks hate the sound of new strings but I love it. The strings that I prefer best are Cobra Coils (sorry JD) and in normal circumstances they will last many weeks before they lose their newness. Also they never break. I buy hundreds of these sets at a time and change them regularly. Why? Because I play my steel up to 10 hours a day every day. It doesn't take long to wear out a set of E9 strings at that rate.

Horses for courses Ken, I always figured anything that was good enough for The Big "E" was sure as hell good enough for me!
