But, these days I get my fix from this forum's main man, JD :guitar: Only the best for Wee Gertie (that's my GFI)

Hi
I dont understand your post . JD say he only imports Buddy Emmons sets . I'm not a peddle steel player , but I understand Buddy Emmons are for peddle steel guitars . Are you saying you use B E strings on a lap steel guitar , or am I missing something?

Hi Pop123,
Sorry for the confusion. I was trying to point out that, if you knew what string gauges you required, you could get a custom set from Gerry Hogan as he sells single strings as well as sets.
I did this myself, for a twin neck console, A6 and D tunings. As well as a custom set for my Carter Starter pedal steel.
Hope this clears any misunderstanding.

Thanks Danny,no worries;
Had a look at Gerry's site . He only sells stainless strings . Not a fan of stainless, too tiny sounding and they wear the frets out on guitars. I will start a new topic on string winding.

Strings direct are a source I sometimes use as you can get a set of individual strings and build your own preference I guess most folks already know this firm already but for anyone who’s not come across them........ I ordered a set for open D tuneing this week arrived next day so pretty good service

I have used Strings Direct for a few bits and pieces, as well as strings, and I too find their service excellent.

I notice that during this difficult time most supply's are slow. But I only use Newtone Strings now on my lap steels and living here in France his supply is very reliable. He isn't the cheapest but he isn't the dearest either and for a small business he takes some beating. Newtone Strings also make it easy for you as they have a custom section with drop down menu, which alow's you to to pick the gauge you prefer. He coimes highly rated and makes signature sets as well.

Well done Maurice for finding strings that suit your needs. Stick with them mate as it will help to keep the company going for a longer period.

I used to swear by Cobra Coil strings but they would frequently have tarnished spots that would annoyingly be picked up by the bar as it passed over the affected strings. Since moving on I have found what I consider to be the finest strings on the market by a country mile, the Nashville-based Live Steel Strings. This company produces sets and single strings. Another company that has a good name these days after a slight hiccup with production issues is the Jagwire company. Again, they make sets for their endorsees, but I'm sure that it's possible to buy single Jagwires direct from the company.

Your tone on So Sad is good indication Live Steel Strings are the business ;)

I only sell the Buddy Emmons Signature string sets as I figure ..If they were good enough for Emmons they are sure as hell good enough for me, I get them directly from the factory in Akron Ohio so they are always fresh and have not been sitting on some shelf for ages, have been doing this ever since Virgil Lay gave me a tour of the factory about 30 years ago, You would be amazed at all the different packaging they go out in but they send all over the world.
Even Ted Nesbitt buys strings from me and he knows a thing or two about steels and strings.....

I have 150 sets of E9 and C6 strings Steven. I keep them boxed in a small enclosure with a dehumidifier close by. The majority of top pro players in the States use Live Steel or Jagwire for a reason. Not because they are cheap, 'cos they're not. It's because they have superb tone & sustain, and last a long time. I used to use a different company many years ago, but they lost that twang after a week or so. D'Addario E9 strings are also improving quickly, and they are competitively priced. When I first started playing pedals, I would be chuffed if I could get through an evening without breaking a string. Never happens at all these days. :D

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I tried the live steel string custom size set for my 12 string E13 .

tarnished all 3 sets.

Went back to Ernie ball and no complaints since.
