Anybody know these lap steels?

Postby malaz » Thu Feb 20, 2014 12:38 pm

Hi Everybody,
Just saw these on the web:

http://www.instruments4music.co.uk/electric_guitars/dimavery_lsg100_lap_steel_guitar_black/24366_p.html

http://www.amazon.de/Offenbarung-Rundenzeit-Gitarre-Deluxe-Nat%C3%BCrliche/dp/6030512226/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ce_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=126B4B5R2HR2C0P0J8Y2

http://www.amazon.de/Ashbury-GR5502-Lap-Stahlgitarre/dp/B00CA28DXM/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ce_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=126B4B5R2HR2C0P0J8Y2

What is the quality like- should I consider one of them? I play 30 year old Guyatone (model unknown, but a beginner's lap steel), so would it be recommended to consider one of the above as replacement?
Thanks for your input.

I had just looked at the links and was about to post a "no" to the first two (especially on the ground of the adjustable :o strat type bridge tailpeice), and recommend the Ashbury out of that lot. Then I saw that you had the same opinion from a genuine guru of the steel guitar. Nuff said! :guitar:
As an afterthought, does your Guyatone not do the biz? If not, maybe it's time you considered a 7 or 8 string? Just a thought
Fender SM T-8: Shakey 10-plank: Ricky 6: Harmony H7 R Smeck,: plus "home-mades"
Fender D-10: Sierra D-11:
Resos- Goldtone 8 string & Regal 7
FenderTwin: Peavey Delta Blues: Marshall AS50R: DigiTech>GK MB200->Telonics 15"

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your response.
I think the pickups on my Guyatone aren't too hot. I play using flatwounds, because if I use roundwounds, when I slide, there is this awful grating noise! It doesn't even sound remotely bluesy! :D
Maybe if I can adjust the pickups this will improve. I've got no idea what pickups are fitted, or if they can be adjusted. :|
I know I can adjust the 6 screws on the pickup itself, but I don't know whether I can adjust the height of the pickup itself at either end.
Also, I will get a C6 set of strings fitted, as I checked what I've got on, and they're .011, .015,....  Waaaay too light! That's probably why it sounds so awful! - I mean as an additional factor to my grotty playing! :guitar:
I think I'd like to get to grips properly with a 6-string lap steel before I start expanding my horizons to 7, 8 or more strings! :ugeek:

Hi guys,
I have another question. What is a good steel? Shubb SP1 or SP2? I like the design, but I can also handle a bullet-style steel, although not with quite as much dexterity!
Thanks in advance for your comments!

I have a shubb sp2, and a small hand it is too big, I would now recommend what I ignored, a stainless steel bullet, easier to hold, easier to mute behind and easier for vibrato.

Hi John,
Thanks for your comments. Although I like the simplicity of the Shubb-style steel, the overall handling of the silver bullet (I bet Dracula doesn't play his lap or pedal steel with one of those! ) wins out.

Good choice, The Shubb bar is for those who play resos, as it's built for hammer-ons and pull-offs.
Reverse and Split slants are not in its repertoire of easy moves, whereas the bullet bar is for all round use.
See this video of my good friend Loren Rymar demonstrating how to practise the moves..

BTW I have one of her courses for sale..
I also Have a Jerry Byrd course for sale. 07800-646-645 text me any-time for details.

Hmmmm...., she says that the concave end of the bar is good for steering it with the thumb. I've got a nice black convex plastic end on my bar...
Maybe a new bar is in order here...
More expense.... :censored:
*Sigh*

Basil, thanks for the link!
