Pressing Too Hard with the Steel

HI Guys
I bought a cheapo lap steel (£99) to learn on but i think it was false economy.
When I put the steel bar on the strings it goes out of tune.
I thought at first it was me pressing too hard but even the lightest
touch and its gone.
I am using Open D tuning.
Question is would i get the same problem with a more expensive guitar?

Alan, it maybe something as simple as your strings gauges are to light.
Try a heavier set and see if the problem disappears
