Recommendations for C6 Tune Books

Postby Garys2811 » Sat Oct 07, 2023 9:09 pm

Hi I'm new to lap steel but have 40 years experience on guitar. I have been meaning to learn for years and I've done a couple of beginner books. I really just want to work my way through some arrangements and i'm looking for recommendations of good books in TAB and Notation. I'm interested in any style really but prefer learning arrangements of tunes rather than licks at the moment. There's a book c6th Gold by R Volk that would fit the bill but it seems to be out of stock most places and the only suppliers with stock seem to be USA and don't ship to UK.

Any suggestions?

Would be interested to know what you were doing on that guitar for 40 years. Depends what you want to do on lap steel. I must admit I fumbled a bit when I started and then things started to fall in to place and I didn't need books. As you know on guitar you know where your 1,4 and 5 chords are and the relative minor. Pick a simple tune - play it in C so you start at the zero fret, then move up to the fifth fret for the F and up another 2 for the G and back to open position. See what you hear and things will fall in to place. Pick a tune on your guitar and try to play it on steel. you'll get it in no time.

There is a mel bay book by Dewitt Scott which is useful and a lot of people swear by Jerry
Birds books. Personally I have not needed them. Once you make a start I can guide you to where you will find the various slants for the more complicated chords.
ShoBud 6139 - Remington Steelmaster - George Boards 8 String - Gretsch Country Gent - National Twin 8 Console x 2 - National New Yorker and a shed full of guitars.

Thanks for the reply. Here's my first attempt at an arrangement. Iv'e not written it out well but the idea is that you let the notes ring on to form the chords.

In short what i've been doing for 40 years- I started playing at school formed some bands with mates, went on to learn Classical and got to grade 7 at age 17. Couldn't go to uni so got a job at the council and joint a showband playing working mens clubs. Moved to Scotland and lost all of my music contacts. Played for scouts, church choirs care homes etc. Got into Scottish Trad and community music, learned mandolin, bass guitar then bagpipes. Set up some "Ceilidh and Covers" Bands played for lost of weddings/ hotels etc. Got into Musical Theater playing, started teaching online, started teaching kids in after schools for free (won and award for community outreach) went back to classical and got up to grade 8 (age 57). Started messing around with lap steel for a bit of fun.
