Winerider,
totally agree with you on the Hal Leonard book, that is now at the back of my shelf. I also have the Mel Bay Steel guitar method which is a lot better. For tunes though with a good quality CD I have both of Doug Beaumiers books with 25 tunes in each with full track and backing track.
After Will got me the Andy Volk book I feel I have a good collection of instruction material to keep me happy for a while.
Can someone please spare some lesson time for me though to crack Harmonics, it is defeating me. Willing to travel a bit, but based in Banstead, Surrey someone close to South of London would be great.

Hi Dave,

There is small pocket sized book called: The Dynamics of Harmony...Priciples and practice by George Pratt which is by Oxford University Press. I have found it more than useful. I had the same problem with Roy Thomson's 4 Star Lap Steel Folio. This book has helped me a lot. There is another 'tome' called Basic Harmonic Progressions, basic it is not but if you persevere there is some light at the end of the tunnel. This more of a text book which has loads of tests in it. All the answers are in it so if in doubt you can always check if you are right, wrong, warm or hot.

This is where I'll probably be shot down in flames, but you have basic theory try and expand it some. A lot of the older pickers on this Forum have had to learn the hard way i.e: listening to music and just copying what they hear, many have an incredible ear for music so they are ahead of many of us.

Hope this helps a little, you're not alone in this respect. I use another method and play the melody line then try different grips of the same chord to get some harmony.

Happy hunting for the right answer and just keep picking.
