Amp in Case Identification

Postby Grahame » Fri Oct 05, 2012 6:49 am

Hi there,

I'm very new to the world of lap steels, and really only discovered it through grabbing a bargain? off ebay. Hopefully if I manage to attach it you will see a very old amp in case lap steel, which I have been unable to identify. From what I have discovered on the net it's very similar to an early Selmer, and some resemblance to an Old Kraftsman, but, I can find no examples of either in a case with amp. There are no identifying marks on anything. The lap steel has been hand painted and looks like mahogany underneath in the apertures. I bought it because I just love old and interesting items in the guitar world, and would like to restore it, or at least turn it into a working guitar. Any body help me out here? It has really grabbed my interest, to such an extent that I would even like to learn to play if I can restore it.

Grahame,

Good luck in your quest. I'm not knowledgeable enough on the guitar side to help you but the amp screams "1940's/50's" at the top of its voice. The black crackle finish on the chassis, the shape of the speaker magnet and the cone, the octal based valves and the screening can on the first pre-amp valve, plus the knobs, are all from that period.

Hope this helps.

Didn't Danelectro or a similar company do an amp-in-case? However they have never made a lap steel as far as I'm aware.
