Resonator /Dobro Question.

Postby Zumbilly(Murdoch) » Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:07 am

Some guitars have square necks and high action and are obviously played using a steel bar.
Other guitars have a "regular" neck profile and low action and can be played either with or without a steel bar.
I know there are attatchments for raising the action on a "low" guitar but what are the advantages of having the High action and the square neck as opposed to the "normal" type guitar.

Hi Billy

I have both types of resonators. I have raised the nut on my round neck with an adapter, and I can say that there is little or no difference in tone between the two guitars when used with a Stevens steel bar. I prefer the square neck for steel playing as the neck is slightly wider and the height of the strings is higher than the round neck with adapter.

I love the round neck for single string guitar style, although the action is slightly higher than my other acoustic guitars. Chet Atkins recorded a lot with his round neck resonator guitar, and I have always loved that sound.

I have a square neck resonator and play it laid across my lap. It's easier to play that way rather than round neck as the square neck means it doesnt roll around.
