Tell me more Tony.Im intrigued by the seventh string thing.I do know about replacing the cone but have not yet got round to it as I only use it for playing in the house and the occasional home recording.BTW the dobro is made by stagg .I cant remember the price but it was less than £200.My mate has a Regal and he says it looks and sounds the same.

Mine's a Regal squareneck with a Quarterman cone. Originally a Paul Beard set-up, I bought it from a guy in Kentucky. The neck is wide enough for the extra string and if you "flare" the nut (make it a tad wider at the top) you can use the whole width of the fretboard. Beard had put the additional peg right in the top of the head. I took that out, filled the hole (see pic. taken during job) and made a neater job by using half a set of mandolin machines on one side (dowelled the three pegholes and re-drilled for four). You also have to slip in a new bridge saddle that bridges the gap in the spider as the extra string goes straight up the middle. That makes it a little tricky to reach the cone tension bolt, but you shouldn't be tinkering with that much anyway once it's set. Drill a hole somewhere on the centreline of the tailpeice and file a slot to match the other string anchor points. BTW; I get the bone to make nuts by robbing the dog! He "seasons" it and I bandsaw and file to shape  .

Henry - never had the opportunity to try one but Paul Beard's reputation is good and the price looks very keen. 8 strings mean the saddle can be in two parts as usual on a spider bridge.
Ray - I have real trouble with 6 strings, 7 is my minimum. I use G6th on resonator as they need a thicker top string. I like a fifth on top, which is a D (a 15 or thereabouts) in that tuning. Using C6th, the top string (a 12) would be too skinny to drive the cone properly.
