Tablature

Fri Oct 13, 2017 7:08 am

Morning all

As a VERY new lap steel player, I'm looking for a source of some very simple TAB to allow me to develop my bar and right hand technique. Most of the examples that I've found so far seem to pre-suppose a certain level of existing skill.

Links to instructional vids would be nice also and I've already found some very good ones on here but am always on the lookout for more, as the change from electric and acoustic guitars and ukuleles to lap steel is a bit of a culture shock at my age.

Thanks

Jim

Sabatia

I've just briefly checked out the video on your link and that should let me get to grips with the technique. I suppose that the next question is how to get that rich "plummy" tone. I have a Clearwater Weissenborn style and, despite some of the negative comments I've seen on the board, I find it to be a good entry level instrument. Yes the pickups could be better but the overall finish is excellent and the price very reasonable (to a newbie like me) and I'm not about to pay a lot for an instrument that I may not be able to get to grips with.
I am running it through the Vox equivalent of a Roland Cube and find its UK80s emulation quite good for this application.
I also have the Zoom G1x0n pedals and a Fender Mustang amp for my guitars but I haven't tried these on the lap yet.

Hi,you might want to take a look at Troy Brenningmeyers videos on youtube, you also have the option to buy the ones you like.
Last time I looked they were $5,I bought a couple using Paypal who did the conversion and they were under £5 each.
I'm new to C6 lap steel and use a Revelation STD,with a Roland Micro Cube amp.

You're welcome.I've signed up with a local music teacher to learn how to read tabs, and some music theory.
He doesn't teach lap steel, but the skills can be transferred to C6.

I'm happy enough reading tabs and I can (usually) make some sort of sense of simple musical notation but I'm not good at it. I have found, however, that even at my meager level of knowledge it does help when I'm learning a new piece.
I've had a look for tuition but Leyland and surrounding areas seem to be a bit of a desert if you're into anything but "Mainstream" pursuits.

I found my guy with this https://www.firsttutors.com/uk/music/
It costs a one-off fee of £7.99 if you find a teacher in your area, and if,after you've chatted to them and you decide to go ahead, you pay the fee to get their details.

As expected Nighthawk, there are no tutors in my area. Thanks for the link though.
