Where to start?

Mon Feb 18, 2013 10:25 pm

I'd like to see about getting into lap (not pedal) steel and this seems a good place for it.
So...
Where do I look for an entry-level lap steel? Ebay? Or are there good more-specialist shops around? I assume all lap steels are much of a muchness up to a point.
And where do I look for some ideas on how to play?
I'm a 20 year+ guitarist, with lots of lovely guitars and not a great deal of natural talent and I just like expanding my knowledge (and guitar collection!) - so all pointers welcome.

I do - rather than dropping £300 on a fancy one in keeping with the rest of my guitars...

C6 will be a challenge - I play a bit of (stand up? What's the alternative to lap called?) guitar slide, but usually in open D or E... I'll give it a go. Cheers for the reply!

Hi Chipps, where are you based?
I've got a similar lap steel to the one on ebay that I dont use. (mine's hte version with legs)

I'm based in South London and you're welcome to take it of my hands.

I might even have the book or a similar one.. I'll have a look when I get home.

Thank for the reply. I'm up in the (not as snowy now) wastes of West Yorkshire, just outside Manchester. Probably not much help, but drop me a line and perhaps we can work something out. I'm chipps(at)singletrackworld.com.

Thanks for that. I'll have a play soon hopefully. Best put a new battery in the tuner :-)
