Stainless steel or Nickle wound ?

Fri Aug 28, 2020 9:18 am

I'm new to the site and I don't play peddle steel guitar . However, I do play slide guitar and lap steel . I don't use stainless strings . Personally I find the tone of stainless too harsh and tiny . But it does seem to be the string most choose on peddle steel guitars . Am I wrong ?

I would not agree with that, I don't think the majority of steel players use stainless steel strings, I tried them, didn't like them, don't think I had them on a week. Over the 50yrs I have played pedal steel I think I've tried all the types of strings on the market, I now use SIT strings and find they do all I need them to do. By all means if you like stainless strings, use them. Everybody's different. Donny.

I think that s/s strings can cause additional wear on the bar.

There was an excellent thread on here, a good while back, around the thought that steel on steel, as in bar and strings, was problematic. It never applied to me as I had settled on nickel SITs by that point.

Stainless wear the frets out on guitars , it would seem stainless has little going for it . I believe some have a allergy to nickle ?
