EDIT: Image resizing is usually no longer necessary, see Auto Image Resizing.

Image attachment limits are currently set at: -

  • Filesize: less than 256Kb
  • Limit of 4 attachments per post
  • Physical Size: Unlimited (recommended 800px x 800px )

If you need to resize images, here are a few free software downloads: -

There are also online utilities such as http://www.picresize.com/ and http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ which you could use.

Once resized, just use the "Upload Attachments" feature (below the post window).

If anyone has any other software recommendations or tutorials please use this topic to share!

Which did you try? I think for simplicity (and speed) the online ones are probably best if you only need to resize the odd image now and then.

Marc (not Bob) ;)

Marc, I tried Image Resizer But could not see an option that would reduce it to the correct size... best it could do was something like 680kb (from my memory and your requirment something like 250????? :? :? :? :? :? I could have this all wrong

If you reduce the physical (pixel) dimensions to within the recommended limits (i.e. 800 x 800) I'd be surprised if the resulting filesize is larger than 256Kb.

Here's the settings I just used at http://www.shrinkpictures.com : -

skrinkpictures.jpg
Image Resize Settings

This resulted in reducing my original file (a whopping 4250 x 1844 pixels - 3.92Mb) to this: -

php2JqUcqPM.jpg

which is 800 x 347 pixels - and only 68Kb filesize :D

I also did a test at http://www.picresize.com and found that this produces files which aren't nearly compressed as much, and so might not be within the required filesize if a full 800 x 800 pixels....so I'd recommend using http://www.shrinkpictures.com.

Also, when using Image Resizer there's a quality option, I don't know what this'll be set to at default (the screenshot on their site has 92) but for uploading here anything around 60 - 85 will be fine - the lower the quality the higher the compression (= smaller filesize).

To update this, I've added a "lightbox" (like a pop-up but nicer) effect to attachments which you may have already noticed. This also reduces larger images to fit the browser window when clicked on, and so I've removed the physical size limitation for image attachments.

The 800px x 800px dimensions are now just a recommendation. The only limit now is the filesize - 256Kb per attachment. As a test this image was uploaded at 2000 x 1502px, 229Kb.

:x Geekology and the like............
And with the greatest respect, :) I come from a generation of people that over half of them is terrified to switch a computer on let alone try to post pics..........Now I am going to tell you about my greatest computer discovery to date>>>>>>>
I use Outlook Express for my email and for ages and ages emailing a picture was a mystery to me,, then one day ifound :o
any picture on my pc that i wanted to email.... if I click the right button over it up pops a box that says "send to" and when you go to it!!!! :o ... up pops another box ....and, one of the options in this box says....."mail recipiant" , one more box asking do you want to shrink it??? and BANG!! the job is done.....there is your pic put into an email and all you have to do is add the address to the email..... no nasty questions about pixels or k.bights or file sizes etc etc

NOW MY QUESTION IS THIS:-
Why can we not have something that simple for YABB forums?? or any forums????? IMHO nothing I have tried comes anywhere near close to the simplicity of my outlook Express experience... IS IT JUST Me?? can anyone else Identify with what I am trying to say here?? I know we have a lot of the "older generation in our ranks..... so now is the time to SCREAM WITH ME!!! GIVE US SOMETHING SIMPLE PLEASE!!!!!
