Here's one I plagiarised from George Rout on the American non-pedal section.

For those of my generation who do not and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.

Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom.

I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day.

I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have four people following me.

Two police officers, a private investigator, and a psychiatrist.

I could never see the point in Facebook, or indeed being befriended by people that I didn't know. I even put a post on this site deriding the point of social media.

However, my wife was desperately trying to track down her friend in Australia, and I joined FB in a quest to find her friend. I didn't track her friend down through FB, but was almost instantly re-united with long lost cousins, friends and family members that I hadn't seen for donkeys years.

Yes, I see that it can be useful for some things. My daughter (in her 40's) manages to contact many of her friends who attended The New English School in Kuwait city, as we lived in Kuwait for 6 years. There were many different nationalities at the school and they're spread all over the world now so it's nice for them to stay in touch.
I did have an account for a while, soon after Facebook started, but I found it very inflexible and awkward when you wished to delete any items. In the end I "commited suicide" and closed the account. However, I believe that all of the information I input still resides on their servers!
My initial post on this subject caught my eye on the American Forum and I think it expresses the thoughts of many of us older Internet users. All in a lighthearted way.
