Typical Newby Question

Hello All

I was looking for guidance as to which Steels are worth looking at,which are ok,and which
should be avoided.

I saw a Carter Starter on youtube but i had heard they were not very good,so
your advice and opinions would be appreciated.

Alan, most on here would advise you to keep away from "student" guitars and I would agree with them but, there are also a few on here that have them and are happy with them..
My best advice is, Buy the very best you can afford in a "used" pro Guitar, reason being, if you pay a fair price for it, you can always sell it and get all of your money back if it doesn't work out for you. this is not always so with student models.
It is a small market place but for good guitars there are always more customers than guitars .........hope this helps.....opinions will vary

I would steer clear of starter guitars apart from maybe the Zum Stage One. I say this because with your musical knowledge & it would seem no small measure of talent you would probably outgrow the limits of a starter guitar quickly ( most are difficult &/or expensive to alter). Hi Alan,
Having gone down the second hand, Carter Starter route myself, I would advise getting the best pro model your budget will allow. For me the CS, while it sounded okay, was just a bit flimsy.

And I'd agree with Slim that a visit to John Davis would be worthwhile, as he always seems to have a range of great guitars setup, in his living room?? This would expose you to different models and hopefully let you get the right fit from the off.

Other guys to contact, through the forum would be Bob Adams, up here in Scotland, and Ted Nugent in Northern Ireland. Bob has fixed a few newbies up with really nice guitars in the short time I've known him. And as far as I know Ted carries a stock of great pro machines. Both heavily experienced and knowledgeable gents.

You'll also have to consider an appropriate amp. Although, having said that, I do most of my practice on headphones.

Good luck with your quest. And don't worry, after you've blown your wedge and your sitting in your back room murdering some country classic, it'll all make sense.

Thanks for the replies,i bought my very first steel from Ted Nugent a WBS Student model,didn't last very long
and Ted took it back.

I see Gerry Hogan has the Zum S10,but it's still a starter model,and while Promenade Music have some excellent models
in stock,they are also quite expensive.

Regards an amp, i DI all my recordings but i have just bought a Mesa Boogie Mark 5/25 head,and i also have a Blackstar ID30 so
amps will not be a problem.
