Having gone down the second hand, Carter Starter route myself, I would advise getting the best pro model your budget will allow. For me the CS, while it sounded okay, was just a bit flimsy.
And I'd agree with Slim that a visit to John Davis would be worthwhile, as he always seems to have a range of great guitars setup, in his living room?? This would expose you to different models and hopefully let you get the right fit from the off.
Other guys to contact, through the forum would be Bob Adams, up here in Scotland, and Ted Nugent in Northern Ireland. Bob has fixed a few newbies up with really nice guitars in the short time I've known him. And as far as I know Ted carries a stock of great pro machines. Both heavily experienced and knowledgeable gents.
You'll also have to consider an appropriate amp. Although, having said that, I do most of my practice on headphones.
Good luck with your quest. And don't worry, after you've blown your wedge and your sitting in your back room murdering some country classic, it'll all make sense.
