This is where you can rest a while and discuss anything - doesn't have to be steel guitar related!

This forum has quickly degenerated

Postby Zebedee » Tue Aug 17, 2010 9:17 pm

I was taken aback by the language that forum member Steve Honest used in a recent post.

This forum had been good-natured up to that point, but I value my integrity, and can't be associated with a forum that allows that sort of unpleasant language.

I bid you farewell

The problem is you can only deal with something of this nature after the event. It seems Mr Honest is no longer with us, so it follows the forum has dealt with the matter as promptly as possible.

I agree with you Graeme, the response time for action in this instance was very good and the offending words removed...... But, this is the real world and a live forum, and some people do speak that way.... I am not defending it! ...But Richard, you surely cannot throw in the towel on account of it ????:(
We need you on this forum :( put it behind us! let it go.... and lets talk steel guitar :) it has been dealt with...... :guitar:

I can assure you Mr Honest's posts were dealt with as soon as we became aware of them. Given that the worst of these was at 1:17am I wasn't able to edit it until 7:36am. At that time he was also warned about his offensive language and place in the "Sin Bin", where any future posts he made would have to be approved before being published. He then attempted to make further abusive posts, which were not approved, and which ultimately led to his being banned from the forum.

I'm sure if Mr Adams hadn't been finishing off his holiday he'd have seen the offending post a lot sooner, as he's usually on until the early hours. Maybe what we need is another moderator or two so the forum is "manned" at all hours....

EDIT: Also, I've got a set of "forum rules" (from other forum's I frequent / admin) which I could post if you feel that's a good idea. I didn't put it up initially as I figured we're all adults here - but Mr Honest's posts have perhaps shown there is a requirement for such things!

Admin Has dealt with the situation admirably.I have no complaints.
I fail to see how the Forum has degenerated.

While Steve H's language was obviously contrary to forum guidelines, I was personally FAR more disturbed by the personal attacks on the music and creativity of a certain steel player on the thread in question. That, for me, marks the real degeneration here.

I was also disgusted by one member's use of the infamous troll tactic of the "Hitler comparison" towards this musician - a comparison which was not considered worthy of deletion by the mods.

I am correct is'nt this the second time around that Sue's playing and style/technique has come
under fire ?, her musical interpretation is'nt my cup 'o tea but if we all played and sounded the same
what a boring world this would be !
I think the Admin handled the incident very well and is not unknown on the US Forum for this sort
of thing to happen, they, also put it down quickly !
Don't get me wrong after twenty seven years in the Prison Service my vocabulary can be quite
colourful but there's a time and place for everything.
Come on Richard, lets have you back !

Unfortunately that's not something that I can do much about! Everyone is entitled to their opinion

Godwin's law is an internet adage that is here to stay. Personally I subscribe to the theory that: -

Wikipedia wrote:...there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress.

And so for that reason it should remain.

If anyone takes offense to any post there's always the "report post" icon at the top right of the post, which any member can use, which will report the post to an admin. Feel free to use it!

I don't think that it would hurt to publish a set of rules and guidelines for this forum. Bobby Lee has frequently published them on the US forum, and he and other moderators pull the plug on posts that are deemed to have overstepped the mark. I didn't see the 'bad language' element by Steve Honest. However, looking at the individuals concerned, I think it re-enforces the case that we should all post our real names on the Forum rather than aliases.

Hopefully this won't stifle healthy debate which is needed at times to make the forum that much more interesting. Richard, I would like to echo what others have said to you here.

Richard, while i understand your principles re forum standards, your decision to quit the forum would only make sense if no action had been taken against Steve Honest, that is not the case, he was warned by admin, as soon as his 'offending words' were spotted, then when he persisted trying to post further offensive words, which were at that stage, being intercepted by admin, and not being allowed on the forum, he was consequently banned, and quite rightly so, in my opinion, so you should re consider your decision, as the matter has been swiftly dealt with, and unlike the last forum, this one appears to be very well policed, i will also follow Ken's suggestion re real names, and change my monicker from 'steddie eddie' [my real workplace nickname] to my birth name, i also agree that healthy debate shouldn't be stifled, a little sprinkling of humour along the way might be just as effective as spurting off profanities, it has to be in good taste though, perhaps the 'adolf' thing was a little bit 'poor taste' so hopefully you will not be lost to us richard,
