I read in My morning paper that Carl Gardner Died Yesterday.
Carl was the original lead singer in the Coasters.
I loved all their stuff,Late fifties,I actually did not know Him by name,He was 83.
Of the songs that they did I loved Yakety Yak,The sax playing was tremendous,I am sure it was King Curtis.

Ditto to all that Billy, Its amazing how many influential old boys and gals pass away and dont quite get the recognition they deserve,especially with group members, when we think back how many groups from 50s60s 70s 80s did we know the names of members?
Being a bit of a Coasters fan I did know who Carl was, but not the same with many past days groups.

Was the sax not Boots Randolph? I know he was around then and certainly did Yakety Sax, very similar tone and playing style.

He was a session Man,Did'nt know He did the solo on Buddy Holly's reminiscing.What a solo that was.

Yes, King Curtis...one of my all time fave sax players. He evolved through different styles from start to end of his career, started off jazzy RnB and went through jazz and funk. I have some of his really early stuff, honky RnB type stuff before rock n roll, inc one called 'Unknown Instrumental' one of his best I reckon but he did so much that this one didnt even have a name! He also did the sax on John Lennon's 'Whatever Gets you thru the night' - not that long before they were both murdered in New York, desperately sad. There's a great clip of KC on you tube doing 'Soul Twist' I think it's at Shea Stadium. I guess you can tell I'm a mad sax fan as well as steel! Been drinking wine and listening to Johnny Paycheck tonight, think I'm gonna have some strange dreams.

I don't want to distract from the original thread but on the first LP I ever bought, Duane Eddy's "The Twangs
the Thang" (which I still have !), the sax player was a guy called Jim Horn and he really got that Rebel sax sound
that made me go all goose pimply !
Not being a sax exponent, I 'm not up on whether there is a top guy around at present but I do know a guy called
Jimmy Jewel (not the one you are thinking about !!) and he can play a mean horn !

There's an American guy called Sax Gordon (real name Gordon Beadle) who is GREAT - there's plenty of him on you tube, inc a great clip of Hot Rod Special (orig by Lee Allen, Little Richard's sax player).
