No Melody ?
What is Melody? My understanding of melody is the player actually playing the notes of the "tune" with minimum improvising,
The guitar solo which Marty plays is the recognised solo for the song being played whilst it is not the notes for "It's a big job just gettnig By"etc., Actually I read somewhere that Merle Haggard loved the solo for Cash's Folsom Prison and created this solo as a tribute to that song,not exactly the same but similar.
The other players on the vid in question are certainly not playing a recognised melody but each is following the chord pattern of the song and none are out of time,I am not defending these players,I guess it is subjective.
Comes back to a well asked question,what to do when I/We play a solo do We play the actual melody or do We improvise around the chord run? I guess most of us can play San Antonio Rose,play it as a solo piece and it is boring as Verse Verse Chorus Verse Verse Chorus and so on,the listener recognises the song quickly and at some time after the "melody" the piece can become much more intereting by playing melodically rather than playing the melody.I am sure I could not play 347 notes in a two hour set let alone in one song
