This is where you can rest a while and discuss anything - doesn't have to be steel guitar related!

"Still sounds like Bob!"

Postby Danny Mitchell » Thu Sep 01, 2016 11:25 am

At the last meeting of the Gartcosh brethren, although a fairly quiet night, the usual good time was had. During a lull in the proceedings people were milling around checking out the various setups and generally chewing the fat. When Bob Adams sat down at Willie Gamble's Mullen and proceeded to knock out a tune. Donny, sitting across the room and with his back turned, immediately piped up, "even on Willie's guitar and with Willie's amp settings, it still sounds like Bob!"

Style? Tone? Are these the moveable qualities that define our playing?

Willie offered me a shot at his beautiful Mullen, too, and I'm sorry to report it still sounded like me
GFI Ultra keyless S10 4+5 Emmon's setup + Sigler, Li'l Izzy, Hilton volume pedal, Roland Cube 80gx, Joyo American Sound Pre-amp, Behringer VD400 Delay Pedal, Peterson Strobo Plus HD and a brace of bars, Ben's, Ezzee-Slide, Pearse, BJS, SIT nickel strings.

Ah Danny!

We all play it as we feel it, but yes it seems we do have identifiable styles..... I guess in our phrasing or areas or the guitar we have a preference for.

There are many on here with such styles , it's just the way we do it!

Identifiable styles: In no particular order are:

John Davis
Derek Thurlby
Peter Nylund
Sarah Jory
Ken Byng
David Hartley
Dave Hayward
Mark Dunn
Dave Kirk
Basil Henriques
Arthur James
Richard Burton
Kevin Bartholomew

Likewise across the water
Richard / Paul / Aidan / Percy / Ted / Joe ...... and and! ........

The list goes on and on ........ all with their own style!

And to mention our own guys Willie, Donny, the two Davies, Alistair, Dougie, John... and and! All have their own recognisable touch be it good or interesting ....... that's what we do!

As for me Danny Boy!............ You and Donny have certainly sussed it .......

I'm just a predictable auld fart! :D :D ....... end of :D'

In my case its the bum notes that I incorporate into my playing some of which turn out to be the best things I have, If you don't give a Rat's arse, don't take yourself too seriously, and laugh when the clams come out eventually, after about 40 years... you can string a toon together :)
