Buying a pedal steel

hi
been a while since my last post not been very well still under hospital and go back in for 4 weeks in november,
any way I've been thinking of up grading from lap steel to pedal steel, but i see so many types on the market i need advice where to start,
I've seen a hudson 6 string 2 pedals and knee leavers also 8/10 string 3 pedals 4 leavers without going to fancy where is the best place to start this would be my first pedal steel,
i know it comes to cost and weather i buy new or used so any help would be great

Jonathan, You are not far from me in St.Neots, you are welcome to come and play some steels here and get some advice. I have 4 different makes here at the moment and lots of tea bags....

IMO a six string pedal guitar will not be a good re-sale prospect and would not be a satifactory introduction to pedal steel. Players generally want at least a 10 string single neck in E9th.
Go see John (no relation) if you can. If that's not possible, let us know where you are and we'll see if there is a local "forum poster" to help you.
Don't buy unseen unless there is no alternative and even then at least check out the seller through the forum.
