My beloved Webb amp let me down in the studio a few weeks ago. I switched it on and the neon mains lamp flickered a few times and the amp expired on me. Very unusual, as the Webb has been utterly reliable since I purchased it new from Tom Bradshaw in the early 2000's. My long time friend and fellow steel player Danny Hughes from Pagham in W. Sussex is a first class electronics engineer, and he agreed immediately to check it out for me. He has some mightily sophisticated testing equipment in his workshop, and very soon had diagnosed that a large electrolytic capacitor was at fault as it had gone short circuit. I ordered a new pair of these components as once one has failed it's probably best to change both of them.
I took the new parts along with the amp back to Danny's and he very quickly had the old ones out and the new ones in. Danny also found a couple of problems with some of the sockets on the back of the amp's chassis, and there was obviously a problem with at least one of them too. When I got home, I plugged in the amp in my studio, and the first thing I noticed was how quiet the amp was. It was hum-free and there was no hiss. He had done a great repair, and I'm a very happy camper. Here is Danny checking out my amp on my first visit to him. Thanks Danny - you're a star mate!
