M-Audio Fasttrack.

Bought one of these little USB soundcards, in the hope of recording my good self, (Warts and all) and seeing how bad I sound!
However, I can only get a really quiet recording from it. It sounds ok, If you're playing through the computers speakers, but when recorded its bearly audible. I've got everything turned up!
Any one got any experience with these?

Hi Jason, What program are you using to record to?. you should be able to increase the volume ofthe recording with the mixer..

protools is the most adapted to M Audio
otherwise, like John, i'll ask you what program or software, are you using Jason ?

The manual clearly describes how to get the optimum performance from it. I may be that you're doing something wrong !!

OK Jason, PLEASE what model is it, If you don't know just give me the numbers that are written on the Unit/Card.
Is it a USB external peripheral or a Card that's inside the computer ?
The only M-Audio cards I know of are:-

All of which I have experience of using, BUT, the usual limiting factor is the Audio Programme that you use in conjunction with them. This also applies to external interfaces as well.

1/ Check on-line that your SPECIFIC driver is "Up-To-Date"
2/ Check with the M-Audio site for downloads and OS updates AND the bundled software.

I did buy it new. It say
M-audio Fasttrack Guitar/ mic recording interface.
I've tried it with Protools, and cant get it to record at all, but I fear I'm not doing it correctly. I've tried audacity with very little sound recorded and Gold wave with nothing at all.
Hmmm.
Might try a mallet next!

If it is, you may have bought it "NEW," but it's been superseded by later models and is quite out of date (Technologically speaking) it was new in 2009-2010 in 2011 they brought out the model I listed below..

I could help IMMENSELY if you could just tell me the numbers written on the baseplate (Where the serial number is)
The problem is almost certainly "Pilot Error"

On inspection of the manual, I just discovered :- When recording with standard DAW applications, the Fast Track USB microphone input is displayed as INPUT 1 and the Guitar/Line input
is displayed as INPUT 2.
You may be set on the wrong input choice and that is a distinct possibility..

and select the "FastTrack USB device (That's what yours is actually called)

The button on the back: the Input Level Switch – Input level selector for the 1/4” TRS input (13). When connecting a balanced line level input here, the
switch should be set to LINE position. When connecting an instrument, the switch should be set to the GUITAR position.
For your usage, the SWITCH should be in the "OUT' position NOT in.

One other VERY important note is that initially, you MUST install the software before you connect the device, failure to follow that protocol will result in corrupted drivers and software anomalies.

If you connected the device and then installed the software, you will need to un-install all and start again following this procedure as recommended by M-Audio in the quick start manual:-

If you use Windows XP, install the software first following the directions below. Do NOT connect the Fast Track USB to your computer until
instructed to do so.
Windows XP
1. Place the Fast Track USB CD into your CD-ROM drive. Do NOT connect the Fast Track USB to your computer’s USB port at this
time. A menu will automatically appear. If Autoplay is disabled, browse the CD content and double click the Fast Track USB folder.
Then double click the Fast Track USB Installer Icon.
2. The M-Audio Fast Track USB Installer screen will appear, asking you to confirm that you wish to install Fast Track USB. Click “Next”
to continue.
3. The installer will begin to copy the Fast Track USB files to your computer’s hard drive.
4. In Windows XP, The Software Installation window may appear one or more times, warning you that the driver software has not
passed the Windows Logo testing. Click the “Continue Anyway” button.
5. Upon rebooting, the M-Audio Fast Track USB Control Panel icon will appear in the system tray. Connect the Fast Track USB to your
computer’s USB port. Windows will display the Found New Hardware dialog and will open the New Hardware Wizard.
6. Choose the default selection, “Install the software automatically,” and click “Next.”
7. The New Hardware Wizard will write the remaining files to your system. You may once again see the warning that the driver
software has not passed the Windows Logo testing; click “Continue Anyway” and allow the installation to complete. Click “Finish.”
8. After the installation is complete, you may double-click on the M-Audio Fast Track USB Control Panel icon to open the Fast Track
USB Control Panel. See the section “Fast Track USB Control Panel” for more information on the Control Panel’s features and
functions.
