I appreciate the price of petrol has gone up considerably so has the price of sausages, but how does that affect the price of second hand Steel guitars. About a couple of years ago I sold an MCI D10 for £1100, now I see people advertising Sho_Bud Mavericks (not the original blonde maple ones)the wallnutty covered ones with three pedals one knee lever, monkey metal pull release changer system for £850. OK if you buy a second hand Steel like a Williams or Mullen etc., which is only a couple of years old I can understand having to pay more for it, but lets face it these old Sho-Buds are nothing special so why are people asking so much for them. GIVE US A CLUE!!. Sorry if I posted in the wrong department
!
Dave.

You are right Dave, I know I am talking about 20 years ago but I sold 2 Mavericks for £99 each, they were pretty tatty I know but it took months before I sold both and then the guys moaned about the price.

it's the prices that have put me off buying a pedal steel, i would love to get a beginners guitar but even these are very expensive...even lap steels have gone up in price, 18 months ago you could pick up a fairly decent one up for under £100 now you have to pay at least double that...

i think this is just a 'maverick thing' prices of steels have dropped dramatically, for a few reasons, firstly, the recession, everyone expects to buy cheaper now, i have seen 3 ZB customs, all beautiful guitars, sell for £850 within the last year, WHY? well it is a shrinking market, players are getting older, very few youngsters taking up the instrument, so prices will keep falling, plus a lot of the steels are getting older, and with more modern GOOD steels being produced, like mullen, etc, this will drive down the price of older sho buds, zb's and emmons etc, the only steel that bucks this trend is the sho bud maverick, they are selling for ridiculous prices, i think this is down to the fact that, if you ask a non steeler to name a psg, they will say 'SHOBUD' cos they have never heard of zum, rains, msa, whatever, and when some newbie starts to search for a steel, they will automatically be attracted to the 'sho bud maverick student guitar' by default, despite the fact that any one who knows about steels, knows they are pure 'crap' guitars, anyone who has any chance of progressing on psg will outgrow the maverick within weeks of starting, it is the newbies who have not sought the advice of a seasoned steeler who is driving up the price of these obsolete monstrosities, there is a reason why they are coloured brown, newbies like you Tel, seem to think they need a student guitar, YOU DONT! buy a real instrument for not very much more money, i dont think there would be one steelie, worth his salt, who would ever recommend a sho bud maverick, i dont think they are worth more than the £99 you got for yours , all them years ago, Roy,

Ditto what Eddie said re the Sho-Bud logo. The guys over in the States are often incredulous at the prices that Maverick's achieve in the USA on eBay.
If I could get my hands on a cheap one I would buy it and use it as a lightweight non-pedal 10 string guitar, because while they are not very good mechanically, they have good tone.

Yes Ken, your dead right, and i should have said, 'they sound superb' obviously the pick up, just not playable, if their one knee lever was a E to Eb, it would have made far more sense, i had this one in my house for a while last year, lovely tone, but it is now hung on the wall of my friend john Staunton's pub in Chicago, along with an old 50's gibson guitar, which was valued at £6000 a couple of years ago in London, couldn't believe he would hang up such a valuable guitar, plus i should have robbed the sho bud pickup when i had the chance,

I,m feeling really silly, I paid £450 for a Rotosound, I think it was 1969. Anyone else out there have one of these? How many were actually sold?
