YouTube Channel sabotage - be warned!

Postby RUPERTSTEEL » Sun Jan 29, 2012 4:52 pm

Hello All, I thought it was definitely worth letting any of you steelies out there with a YouTube channel of my recent unfortunate experience. Having had a YT channel posting my personal steel guitat vids for 3 years & notching up over 600 subscribers, imagine my horror when last week somebody hacked into my account & uploaded 6 hard porn films onto my channel!! I have absolutely no idea who, why, & particularly how, this was done. The titles of these films were in a foreign language that I did not recognise - possibly eastern european. Not only were these videos uploaded, but also shared with my contacts!!! I was kindly alerted to these uploads by a YT friend in the USA, & when I tried to delete them, more uploads would start automatically!! I managed to get off a short bulletin to all contacts before deleting my channel completely. It seems absolutely incredible that something as innocent as sharing amateur music with like-minded friends worldwide should attract such very distasteful attention...I find it unbelievable!! So guys harden up your YT passwords (mine was easily guessable) & stay vigilant, if it has happened to me it could happen to you!!! Kindest regards & happy steeling to all - Rupert Kingston, Essex.

ps A fellow musician friend suggested that had I left these films on my channel my subscription rate would have doubled over night..........well if I didn't laugh about this experience, I'd cry!!!

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

I strongly advise anyone with a Google account (YouTube / Gmail / Google+ etc. etc) sets up 2 Step Verification, see Getting started with 2-step verification.

With this setup it is virtually impossible for anyone else to access your Google account unless they know (or correctly guess) your password AND are in possession of your computer or your mobile phone.

Nice one Marc, i'm just about to set up a channel so that advice is essential.

Rupert, i can't understand why someone would want to spice up your channel (steady), surely the steel videos are enough to get the blood pumping in their own right.
